Freshman Railyn Cox Finds Valuable Niche on Charleston’s Talented Softball Squad

Just six games into the season, and the Lady Trojans are already making waves with an undefeated streak, kicking off Apollo Conference action with a swift 2-0 start. Following their sweep of the rival, they find themselves sharing the spotlight with Mt. Zion, who also secured victories in a fierce doubleheader against Effingham. While we could easily sing praises for standout players like Rylee Shrader and Avery Beals, one name that stands out is Railyn Cox. Though her name might not ring as loudly yet, Cox is carving out a unique role in the early season lineup of the star-studded Charleston squad.

Simply put, Cox does as is needed to help the team. This season, she has alternated between first base and catcher for the Lady Trojans. During her time at CMS in 8th grade, Cox primarily played as a pitcher and first baseman. However, with Aubry Cross now serving as the #2 pitcher behind Addison Shrader, Cox has seamlessly transitioned from pitching to catching for the Lady Trojans. Additionally, Cox is juggling responsibilities on both the Trojans’ JV squad and varsity team, gaining valuable experience along the way.

In her first six varsity games, Cox is making her mark at the plate with a batting average just shy of .300, hitting .294. She’s notched three doubles, a triple, and driven in 7 runs. On the plate discipline front, Cox has shown poise, striking out only four times while drawing three walks. Defensively, she’s been reliable, committing just one error in 24 attempts, boasting a .958 fielding percentage.

While Cox’s stats may not dazzle to the neutral observer, her role is pivotal and her contributions invaluable. Charleston relies on her to fill a crucial niche within the team. Sometimes, simply executing your duties consistently is all it takes to earn your place. As a freshman, Cox has been fulfilling her responsibilities admirably, precisely what Charleston needs from her at this stage.
